Ruby Amp, two speakers better then one?

Got A Ruby wired up to a 5" speaker, is it worth hooking it up to TWO  :icon_eek: speakers, or dose the power it take to power the second negate its use?

In general, more cone surface = more air movement = more volume.  However, speakers are conditionally linear devices.  That is, above a certain wattage they behave in a linear fashion, up to some other wattage output.  Below the minimum, and above the maximum, however, they become non-linear.  Dividing up limited output current from the amp between two speakers may well put each speaker below the minimum point.  You can certainly try it, but since the Ruby is only a paltry half watt, there may be insufficient current to get both cones moving in a way that produces the full range of frequencies they are capable of.  Personally, my advice would be to enhance overall loudness by putting that 5" speaker (assuming it is sufficiently efficient) in a larger and better-designed cabinet that will make the most out of what the speaker can offer you with 250-400mw.

Thank you Mark, excellent informative answer!  :)

I havent found a speaker smaller than a 5" Jensen MOD that sounds good with the RUBY
Now that you got your Ruby working try the little GEM MKII.
If you use the high ouput 386 chips and run at 12V it will be quite loud at 2 watts.
Sound amazing for what it is through a good efficient speaker say 96-100 db SPL.
Only I haven't found any guitar spkrs (or any spkrs) that are small AND high efficient.
Two 386 chips bridged at 18V running through my 12" Eminence Lady Luck (98db SPL spkr)
Is VERY loud and sounds amazingly good.
I'm no EE or even a tech, just a monkey with a soldering iron that can read, and follow instructions. ;D
