I have tried Small Bear's BC109 (avergage HFE 400-600) and the BC109 workalikes (average HFE 200-300).  I see BC109Cs out there from some suppliers, but no As. Does anyone have an idea where to get them in a good range for the Fuzz Face (HFE 70-130)?

...or BC108 or 2N2222A. Either will work in that circuit.

I will check those out, as I am breadboarding many different versions of the FF.  My favourite so far (even more than NKT275 or AC128) is a hybrid 2N2369A  and OC140.
But still, I really want to try and find the BC109A.

Oh, did you try the Mousers  cat ?

No BC109s are stocked at Mouser, thanks though.

None of the BC10x datasheets I've looked at list BC109A. They list BC109, BC109B, and BC109C. Are you sure the "A" grouping exists?

BTW, you can get new Multicomp brand BC107, BC107A, BC107B, BC108, BC108B, BC108C, BC109, BC109B, and BC109C from Newark for $0.31 - $0.34 each. I bought a sampling of these and posted average values in a topic here somewhere.

Interesting Mike, thanks.  I have seen the BC109A available from a few online stores in the UK.  Only one store lists the average gain though and it is around 300.  Perhaps the BC109 simply doesn't come in a low gain version?  I know some Fuzz Faces were made with them, so I assumed there was a version that would have the gain range generally considered appropriate for the FF, but perhaps not!

They just didn't care about the "appropriate" gain range back then.  ;D
