If you are ording parts anyway you should check out some of the DIY specific stores.  There are some great vendors with a wide slection and better pricing:

http://www.smallbearelec.com/home.html
http://www.effectsconnection.com/oscommerce/
http://www.pedalpartsplus.com/
the super store: http://www.mouser.com/

well, actually i am only going with radioshack if i can pick up locally. if i order i'm going to order the forum kit since it's the same price but has the 3pdt switch.

thanks for the links though. next pedal i will definitely use them. i just wanna get started yesterday because i am so exited to do it.

for small orders it's a good idea but you're going to find yourself commonly reusing certain values of certain components.  for instance any multiple of 10 is often times used throughout several builds.

just to give you some perspective...

------------------------------------------------
[Xicon 291-1M-RC]
Mouser Part #:    291-1M-RC
Manufacturer Part #:    291-1M-RC
Manufacturer:    Xicon
Description:    Carbon Film Resistors 1Mohms 0.05
1:             $0.10
10:            $0.04
200:     $0.014
1,000:    $0.007
5,000:    $0.006
10,000:    $0.005
50,000:    $0.004
100,000:    $0.003
------------------------------------------------

as you can see, things scale depending on how many you get.  so if you're going to do small projects radioshack is good, but if you want to do more than two i would look into some other places.

also, as it relates to the strip board vs. perf board thing.. i just recently made that mistake myself. luckily perfboard isn't terribly expensive.
basically, as long as you know what order everything goes in (in terms of continuity) then you'll be fine... just save your leads. :]

yea i was browsing that site earlier. i was going to ask for a comprehensive list of bulk buy components when i got to the next pedal.

with the whole perf vs strip thing: i feel that strip board is kinda "cheating" for me at this stage, i need to build things the hard way so i can learn. i see the advantage to the strip but i don't wanna go the easy route yet.

i went to a science and surplus store yesterday. picked up 2 breadboards (one with power, one without)-8$, a "copious amount of resistors" as they had them labeled, varying values, 480 in total-8$, some random switches and knobs.

so i need to order some perfboard and caps, along with the transistor, but i think i will stock up on everything from the start. i would greatly appreciate it if someone could give me a list of these for which i would be using in beginner to intermediate projects, i am planning on using mouser as they seem to be best. i would really rather just drop 100$ or so and get enough components to be able to make anything as compared to nickel and diming it at radioshack. :)

I know, but the pedal i built does not boost...it just increases volume!

yep, that's pretty much what i was getting at. i am actually thinking of foregoing the npn boost after looking at the dallas fuzz circuit. seems about the same level of complexity with more room to experiment. my madison head has distortion that is fricken ridiculous as it is, and i didn't hear much of a change with a emg 20 db booster. now that i bought a breadboard i can really immerse myself in the hobby though.:D

thanks for the link, how many value packages of each type would you recommend i order?

One of each should be a good start but i won't personnaly order the IC packs...useless i think! So, 1/4W res, electro/mylar/multilaeyr normal ceramics caps, led if you wants, trannys maybe...check the pots section...and the IC section for single/dual opamp, and on and on...search around for post on that matter.

done. thanks so much. now i just have to wait 15 days to start.

i ordered one of everything except the ic's and the one below that, as well as 3 of each type of linear pots. and in a spectacular dumb ass move i forgot to order board. :icon_eek:

order them asap and ask to combine package in one shipping...Order a few transistors (2n3904, 2n5089, BC108, JFET, mosfet) and ICs (4558, lm741, tl072...) while you're there also. Look what's most common...

Good luck!

i ordered the linear ic, transistor and diode packs. i got one of everything on that page except the bottom 2 (ic sockets & IDCC Pack). as far as board, i come from a machinist background, so i figure if i really need it i can either make it or pick it up at radioshack. no biggy, i like to think outside of the box. i plan on doing a lot of breadboarding before i build anything permanent anyhow.
