im building a string ringer and have come up against seeing you need an xfmr trim on the attached board, can i just use a normal trim pot? what is this xfmr and is it different?

Xfrmr is shorthand for Transformer. Can you link to the information that you have read?

That trimpot controls the amount of feedback from the secondary of the transformer back to the primary.  I would think you could just use a standard trim pot there, since feedback loops are typically very low power (even in high voltage tube amps you can get away with 1/2W resistors).
