Well at present not too good. I have subbed a lot of components as I'm a bit light on stock ha ha, Diode 1N5817, Cap 0.47uF and a 100k Lin Pot .

Not getting too much sitar out of it maybe its my rig , using my old tanglewood with Humbuckers into my old Linear Linnet Five ss amp, just getting a mild distortion but maybe its very rig dependant.

Hey Darron, cheers for the circuit, going to through it together later, I think if you check Yun's fuzz circuits he adds something similar to them at the beginning so maybe check it out to see if it gives you any more ideas.

Will post my results later

Cheers

that will be cool (: it's supposed to make you sound crappy. let me know what pickups you use also

thanks (:

Hey Darron, did you read my post above? The Tanglewood is a Tomkat PRS type guitar with usual cheap passive humbuckers going through a single tonbe and volume control. I did play about with the tone volume and pickup selection but didn't get much joy. I have a Bronx cheer so I was aware of timbre changes thru volume and tone. Still not getting any joy out of it so maybe I should get the correct components although I think the diode is ok .

Where you using a Single coil guitar? I know there was a lot of reverb etc on your clip but even so mine sounds completely different at present. If I get chance I might add second diode on a switch to see if that help and add the correct value cap.

I know this doesn't help you as you have the working original but might help the others.

Cheers so far

hmm.. the pot should be alright, it's just a volume drop. what did the 0.47uF cap sound like in terms of treble/bass? the schottky should allow the low signal to pass a bit and clip. not sure about your substitute. is the unit distorting a little bit? if you want the twangy effect then use it on the thinner strings anywhere on the fretboard. adding the extra diode in the revese direction will double the distortion and probably make your circuit much quieter, but then it won't have that 'twangy' effect with the really cheap sounding decay anymore. it would sound closer to a fuzz crossed with overdrive.

i used gibson alnico hubuckers in the recording. i'll pick up my pedals today and try to get some recordings done soon with what the intended purpose of the sound degrader.

thanks for giving it a shot though (:

I know it would sort of take away the simple elegance of this circuit, but if you put a boost before it, could you use a germanium or silicon diode in the same circuit?

OH NO! I THOUGHT THAT THIS HAD DISAPPEARED! LOL

I'm not sure about the boost idea. I have a feeling that you may end up with a little bit too much volume and not enough clip. If you take the vol put out and put a diode before and after the cap then it makes it even stronger though. You can always try it really easilly though if you have any boosts lying around, just clamp a diode in quickly on both sides of it. Then fiddle with the cap value.

this was only a bit of fun... don't expect too much (: hehe

Darron,

Listen to Mothers Little Helper by the Rolling Stones!

Sort of sounds like what you made.

Peace!

Wow! That thing sounds really good! So simple too!

I think it would be cool to put right into a guitar with a switch to turn it on and off - poor man's electric sitar  :icon_mrgreen:
