Both of your points are exactly what Im going to do.
I've purchase multiples of each cap (hundreds) and will test them all and find an accurate set.
Following that, everything will be hidden in a guitar cavity and attached to a rotary switch. I will be the only one who knows the values, then I will have several players play to each other and provide thier feedback. I may even make an internet study out of it.. i.e. list options 1-12 with audio samples and no descriptions of the caps.
OK, as far as it goes. Still go google "Clever Hans".

The guy who figured out that Hans was watching his owner for clues for when to stop pawing learned to give clues to Hans, so after that, he could give the clues and Hans could then answer any question within the bounds of the obvious limitations of pawing that the exposer could answer. The problem was the exposer then found out that he was unable to NOT give Hans clues, even when he knew what was going on and was trying to NOT give the cues to Hans.

Beyond that, the player's feel for the wired guitar would color their preferences too. Internet tests with sound samples are at the mercy of the reproduction quality of the sound sample/playback/speakers on the receiving guitar, and of course nobbling the test by malicious participators.

It's really quite a bit of work and a serious school of learning to make up such experiments. I seem to remember that there is a specialty know as design of experiments or some such.

Good luck with it!

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.
