transistor headphone amp

has anyone here either done this or something like it before and if not do you guys think it would work?

What does the DC current do to the headphone?

YES, this plan is very old, and does "work". Use a carbon microphone, an 8 ohm announcement horn, a big transistor, and a 6V car battery, you got a "megaphone".

But "works" and "works good" may be two different things.

  Old computer speakers, some have headphone output, and come with everything, adapter too. Cassette decks sometimes have nice headphone outputs, preamps.

I have a set of mini sony speakers for old cassette  walkmans, they have a IC amp built in, I always wanted to take it apart and make it into a booster pedal for guitar....just never got around to it. I did however rig it quickly and tested it on guitar and it sounded pretty good.
