Well I already built two SHOs and two Dr. Boogeys.  Gonna build another Dr. Boogey for another person, too.  Now I want to go get back on doing new projects and thinking about the Metal Simplex and the Valvecaster.

My question is, does the LED have to be one of those weaker lighted ones, like the diffused ones?  Or can I also use a high-brightness LED and still have it blink light?

Also, what are some good mods to increase gain or nicer breakup or treble?

I might not always be right, but I'm never wrong....

Well I can't comment on the super bright LED's but the color makes a difference.  I tried different colors and there is a difference btwn lets say red and green.  I used green which sounded clearer to my ears.  I tried many trannies too.  I ended up liking the 2N2222's the best.  The 3904's were too fizzy to me.  Maybe try a super bright green LED and see if it blinks.  An easy bread board project.

+1 about your TO BUILDs!!! (I built both, obviously!)

I made a toneless version of the MS, I believe you get some more gain without...And put 3904 and standard red led...
It's great for such a simple(x) circuit!!! It's METAL!!!
Done an' workin'=Too many to mention - Tube addict!

I just remembered I got a breadboard that I ripped off from this radioshack kit that teaches basic electronics.  I'll buy different LEDs, both diffused and high brightness and then I'll comment back about results of the blinking.

And to Renegadrian: yeah, I don't like tone knobs, I'm going to build your versions of the Valvecaster and Metal Simplex.  I mostly want to build the Valvecaster, but the Metal Simplex is cheaper so I'll start with that.
