Hi folks,

I finally had a chance to record few quick clips. I picked two songs from Dream Theater's album Train of Though which I believe is recorder with dual recto which we all know is pretty much a clone of soldano and thus similar to the circuits in question. Anyways, my chain was

Ibanez RG2550 (Dimarzio Crunch Lab bridge p'up) - Custom x88r preamp - MXR 6 band EQ - Palmer PDI-09 - Boss MicroBR

Dr Boogey clip was recorded a day or two before I got the new pickup, so I used stock Ibanez (pretty decent pickup IMO). I added dr boogey clip for comparison, for this type of sound it can do pretty good job.

x88r is only the lead channel, no switching, no tone stack. The first stage is parallel triode with values adjusted to operate close to the original single triode stage.

Clips can be found here:

I'll try to add some more clips these days when I get more patch cables to connect wah and delay.

Please excuse sloppy playing :)

And few pix:

Very cool pre-amp...playing skills are tight as well. Nicely done!

Pretty awesome. I really enjoy that preamp breakup. The Boogey would be tighter in a band, very focused, but I love the raunch of the 88. Sounds really good, and it's really easy to see the difference between the builds when you play the exact same song. Great job.

The tube preamp looks great! Nice clean work there.
Sounds good as well.

good work (and nice chops!)

the boogey sounds good, but the x88r sounds great!

Thanks anti-idiot

Yeah, taking cost of build into account DrBoogey holds up well against x88r for this type of sound.
But of other stuff even single channel x88r is more versatile. Gain pot range on the x88r is much more useful, from 0 to maybe 6 or a bit more it starts with cleanish and adds more crunch...over 6 it adds sustain. Boogey on the other hand has a useful range between 2 and 3. Everything under 2 sounds somehow dry and over 3 is over-saturated for my taste.
Also, with winter approaching warm box full of tubes may be useful to keep me warm :icon_mrgreen:

Btw, I put boogey up for sale, if anyone's interested. x88r covers that ground pretty well, so i don't need both.
