A couple of people have built it and liked it.  I myself, have not built it.  

Use of feed-back vs feed-forward is a matter of personal taste.  Use of a separate gain stage for setting the degree of squish, however, IS an improvement to the basic OS design.  Dan Armstrong aimed for the simplest possible circuit that could achieve the desired outcome, and the OS circuit conforms to that.  There are a number of excellent "revisions" to the basic OS circuit out there, including the OS+ and OS++, and the LA Light, all of which have lengthy posting histories here.
