Ok so this is probably a silly question, and an equally silly idea, but how would one go about wiring a guitar pedal so that the LED pulses with the intensity of how hard the strings are being played?

Never checked to see if it worked yet, but positive results from responding people. It is the front end of the clari(not) schematic. I'd imagine you can use from end of auto-wah pedals that use LED and LDR combos, but just use the LED part.

For drawing/sim, you can use LT Spice, MTH...it's free (search Google)!

For a distortion pedal, find the output pin of one of the opamps in the clipping circuit.  Solder in a 10k + 10k resistor divider between V++ and ground, and connect the LED between this point and the opamp output pin.  It will flash when you play.

Another way is to replace clipping diodes with LEDs, and merely mount one of them to the bezel on the top of the pedal where you can see it.   This is an extremely simple thing to do .
