I doubt it's cheaper than DIY unless you are including the cost of the boot...

I did wonder how big the interior was. If it's a good size you might just use it as enclosure for another project.

It's probably a piezo pickup in a piece of wood.

I've known singer songwriters who use them live - they can create a simple rhythm to accompany the percussive acoustic guitar.

Any shematics around? Goop inside? Just a piezo?

Not this summer but one before I saw killer rock billy trio and they just had old suitcase which someone kicked. There was just some dynamic mike put inside with some foam padding or something. My friend did the sound and the mic was from pa guys not their own he said but sounded good. They did a bluesy number when a slightly drunken man walked an ugly dog side the stage and the dog started to howl in tune, that was a mojo moment.

I bet there's a little more to it...I bet certain woods resonate better.

Next thing to to is add a fuzz to it or at least a tone control.
