Hi - I'm having difficulty with with a GGG kit: the OSQ (Dan Armstrong) replica. The assembly was pretty straightforward, but I cannot get it to have any effect on the guitar sound. As far as I can tell, the problem maybe in the area of the OP amp - I have the following voltages on the 5, 6, and 7 pins that don't look right:
5: 1V
6: 2V
7: 6V

The circuit looks OK and I cannot see any shorts, and so any suggestions would be welcomed at this point. Thanks in advance, Martin

What is your supply voltage?  How about voltages on the 2N5457? Is it in correctly (right orientation)?  Please post a link right to the schematic you used so we don't have to go hunting.....I have a schem, but it's not GGG and the pin #'s are different (using the other 1/2 of the opamp).

Does it boost the signal if you turn the knob up?  The OS will give you LOTS of volume gain, a little bit of OD, but not a whole lot else....I use mine to boost for solos!  Not a lot of modern-type 'compression', really...

Hi, and thanks for taking an interest! The schematic for this stompbox is at:

I am using a 9V power supply.

I measured the voltages off the two 2N5457 transistors and they are as follows (I've included the voltages suggested by GGG in brackets):

Q1: Gate: 2.6V (2.4)
      Source: 4V (4.0)
      Drain: 9V (8.8)
Q2: Gate: 0V (0.6)
      Source: 3V (2.6)
      Drain: 1V (2.1 to 2.6)

So it looks like there is a problem around the Q2 (though I'm not sure how this would affect the IC voltages). I am pretty certain that the JFETs are in correctly (both from the schematic and the picture provided by GGG). Turning the knob up does give a lot of volume, but nothing I do affects the guitar sound.

I am using the diode that came with the kit - a 1N100 germanium diode. Thanks for any help, Martin

There's actually a reason for all the data requested in that "Debugging Thread: What to do when it doesn't work" stickie.

The data that's requested tends to solve a whole lot of problems. It's really helpful to have it all at once.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.
