Dr. Boogey - are there substitutes for transistors used?

Hi,

I'm new here. I have been recommended to try building Dr. Boogey. I use Laney LC15 single channel tube amp so supposedly it will solve my problems with tone of distortion.

Can I use other transistor in Dr Boogey layout? In original version, there's j201. Can I use BF245 ? They are easily available in Poland. If they are not ok - are there any substitutes for j201 ? If there's no better possibility, I order those j201.

you could use any JFET:

J201
MPF102
2N5457
2N5459
2N5458
2N5952
2N5485

don't know if the BF245 is a JFET...

PS: they would make the pedal sound different .... but it is a matter of taste

yes, bf245 is a fet. I've got nice sound with bf244 but take care about its pins.

Hi- welcome to the forum!

If this is your first build, you might not want to go the Dr Boogey route, unless you have some applicable experience with these things.  There are many, less-complex builds that will go with your amp just fine.  JFETs can be tricky, stubborn, and just down-right impossible sometimes, also controlling the noise from Dr. B can be a challenge.  But if you have some know-how, by all means, go crazy.

IME, some of those won´t amplify unless you change the source resistor.

dschwartz, please tell me how it is with BF245 - those are in my toolbox so there's no need to order any other.

I know that BF245 has different pins than most of transistor used in guitar fx. I have made several projects from tonepad so I have some basic experience. Now I'm a bit busy with preparing for graduation exams and driving license exam. I started this thread to get prepared earlier for the build getting into account that I might had to order FET's from other country. Well, there's luckily no problem with them.

Thank you guys.

I got one more question - how do you set the trimpots? Are they to bias voltage supplied to the transistors?
