Just went to build the Keen rig as my DMM dose not measure Hfe

But dont have any 2.4K 

Will using a 5K pot, and dialling in 2.472K be Hunky dory?

I dont see why not,you could also use two resistors in series,like 1k and a 1.5k just sort em and match a pair that gives the right R
Carbon film seem to be fairly all over in value I just sorted through until I found the right values.
