A friend asked me how to do this, so I drew up a quick diagram. I'm sure I've seen it done somewhere before on the forum or the interweb, but thought it was worth posting.

Okay, maybe a stupid question but here goes:
I have a single channel Marshall tube amp and I roll back the neck pick up and max out the bridge pick up and switch between clean and overdrive by flicking the pick up selector.
Could this be used instead of the pick up selector?

I mean, could you by pass one side (skip one pot) and use the other pot to dial back the volume to get cleans while by passing to get full out overdrive?

MmmPedals

It sure can! but you dont need 2 pot just 1 to roll off the volume and bypass for full volume. EH has a pedal called the attenuator which does just that.

The values for the pots are the values that the FX is useing... like if you have 100k - A volume pot, for the 2nd one you will use a 100k-A volume pot too....
And that desingn, i asked for it :D, :) and as always rick (freq. central) is a boy from outta space and a good friend :)

for that, i simply use a dpdt switch, one switch for selecting the mid lug of the pots, and the other for the led´s.. works like a charm..
the only detail is that the resulting resistance to ground is paralleled, so i double the pot resistance value, and voilá.

Search the layouts gallery for the "Clean Machine".  It's made exactly for that.

Using (drastically) different pot values could have useful benefits as well.  For example if your driving circuit has high output impedance, a higher value pot will give more maximum volume.  Or if this is used before a long cable, a lower value pot will retain more treble at lower settings.  Lots of possibilities beyond simply two preset volume levels.

Just finished my dr. boogie with 2 volume settings (rick schematic) and is working like a swiss watch :D no pops no hum just a perfect sound :D and the 3 leds are just awsome.
