I was recently in Dick Smith and wanted to pick up some shielded wire to redo my bsiab2 (it's a little noisey).  But when I got
in there I discovered that the stuff they labeled "shielded" had a normal wire inside, then covered with strands of copper wire,
then a layer of rubber-ey stuff on the outside.  Is this the stuff we use?  And, is there some specific formula for wiring up a
pedal we want to quieten down?  I've read it's something to do with the input/output jacks with the central wire, then grounding
the shield at one end...or something?

Thanks  all   :)

Quackzed

basically, the strands of copper wire act as the shield... so thats normal shielded wire...
the wire on the inside carrys the signal, the wire on the outside gets grounded at one end only, to avoid a ground loop, if the shield is grounded at one end, the whole shield will be at ground and theres no need to ground both ends anyhow...
adding shielded wire for the input wire can help noisey builds...
                        ground
                             \
input jack  ------==='//////////////////,=====-----  input of effect or input of switch
                                                      \
                                                       no connect
this way, the input is shielded from any stray interference and noise, and doesn't create a ground loop to carry noise to the circuit.
you could do this from the switch to the input of the effect as well... just ground at the circuit board side and no connect of ground at the switch side..inner wire wired normally
nothing says forever like a solid block of liquid nails!!!

Excellent!  Thank you.  At the jack end, should I ground on the sleeve or the enclosure?
And is it ok to ground the circuit board > switch wire on the ground pin of the switch itself?
Any other recommended places to use shielded wire?

hi phil..

i use sheilded on the input of the board mainly...rca/phono lead cable.....works on hi gain stuff a treat...

i use the inner core for the input..then the outer core goes to ground on the board..but the other end of the outer

is not connected to anything...

i built a pedal for a mate and he lived in a highrise block and he got radio coming out...whoops..ha ha..

i forgot to shield the input..did it and it was sorted...dont ask what channel it was ha ha...

Cool thanks dude.  Look out Jaycar, you will soon be devoid of shielded cable.   :icon_twisted:
