Came across this posting by R.G. in an old thread:

QuoteBoth the Dynacomp and the derivative Ross compressors distort the same way, and for the same reason. They have no signal reduction on the front end whatsoever... [t]o mod the thing, you need some sort of signal reduction on the front end. The simplest way to do this without rehashing most of the circuit is to tap the emitter resistor on the input transistor to provide a smaller, but still buffered signal to the CA3080. With the 10K resistor that is already there, I would do an 8.2K/2.2K or 9.1K/1K split and connect the capacitor that used to go to the emitter of the transistor from the input of the 3080 to the tapped point on the new split resistor.

Not sure how to interpret the phrase "with the 10K resistor that is already there": does it mean to replace the 10k with the split, or does it mean in addition to the 10k?  If the latter, would it mean parallel? Series?

Thanks for any assistance  :P

Replace the 10K with a voltage divider to cut the signal level.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Gotcha. That's what I figured.  Thanks, R.G.
