Mini Booster with Ge Buffer?

Hi all,
been working on some Mini Booster mods, like the buffer detailed here - http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/modmuamp/modmuamp.htm

Using a JFET buffer seems to increase the gain of the circuit / audible overdrive (compared to the same circuit without the buffer), there is also a little more high end.
Replacing the JFET buffer with a Ge NPN buffer, the amount of audible overdrive is about the same as without a buffer, but with slightly more high end, unless I'm imagining it.

Will using a (possibly leaky?) Ge NPN, as described above, actually buffer the circuit? (I just want to avoid the output being loaded down and losing gain, not increasing audible overdrive).

Cheers!
