Searching for the same tone, which Metallica in the garage had

My favorite guitar tone is in the song called "Sabbra Cadabra" from the Metallica's "Garage, Inc." album.
What pedals should I make to get closer to it?

I read that James Hetfield used Mesa Boogie Triaxis preamp. Is there a SS imitation?

I made this up from the schematic of the Triaxis... haven't tried it, tweaked it and have no idea what it'll be like but feel free to make it and let me know!
It's the Lead 2 overdrive section IIRC

If anyone builds this, please be sure to post a 'report' so we can know if it worked/how it sounds.  Sound clips would be cool, too!!  Thanks.

I just built Triaxis, and it's cool 8) thanks for the schematics Scruffie :) nice smooth heavy sounding, I like it :) however I need more gain. Probably is sense to increase the value of C2. I'll experiment tomorrow, because it's too late, 02:08 PM in Ukraine now :o

Scruffie

You built it, sweet  ;D Well it's only the overdrive section so that could be the cause for lack of gain... if you used the tone stack aswell and that's sucking some perhaps using the J-Fet buffer to give more gain would help too like in the Big Daddy schematic http://www.runoffgroove.com/bigdaddy.png

Let us know how you get on with the experiments! Glad to hear it works, how close does it get you to the Metallica sound? (That's why I drew it up in the first place... just never got round to putting it into practice)

Oh, sorry, I meant 02 AM :icon_redface: ;D

thanks for the tip, I insert that JFET stage in my Triaxis ;)

Hmm, quite close, but slightly less on high frequencies. By the way, I used the mica capacitors for С1, C4, C7, C8 8)

Hey Unknown Art1st, did you get a chance to try alterating the J-Fet Buffer to the Big Daddy version? I'm thinking of building this one up soon myself and i'm wondering if I should add another stage for more gain or not... gunna have to do some breadboarding.

I'm also wondering about adding Miller capacitors simmilar to that in the Gaussmarkov Dr. Boogey schematic (The small 220pF cap accross the Gate & Source of the Fets to add a Frequency Response more like that of a tube) and was there alot of noise with the pedal as it is?

Cheers!

Sorry for the long silence.
I inserted a Jfet stage, it helped, though not by much. The overall tone still didn't satisfy me :(
I can't say anything about noise, 'cause the circuit worked without casing.
I guess this is my personal preference, I like harsh opamp-clipping tone more than Jfet-produced one.
But maybe you will like it.

Scruffie

:( Hmm, looks like it'll have to be a work in progress, i'll have to look at the triaxis schematic again and see if anything can be added, changed or re-done.

I understand what you mean about harsh clipping, in alot of cases I do like it but I still like the Dr. Boogey so it's possible this can be coaxed to perform better as I have been after something to produce a metallica type tone, I wouldn't know where to begin with converting the circuit to work with Op-Amps.

I'll give it a go and some experimenting and see what I can come up with and post here if I get anything that improves the tone.

Cheers for the Reply though and testing it out to start with  :)
