I get it.  Yeah, that is sort of counter intuitive.  To me, many distortions need a treble boost in front since the bass is stronger and has more sustain.  Many standard diode op amp distortions achieve similar results by rolling the bass off in the feedback loop.  By putting a cap between ground and diodes it sort of reversed the situation to add bass back in.  It's another deal about pre and post distortion EQ.

Back to this deal.  It would seem that using a Rail to Rail op amp to provide higher output than the old standbys would be a good plan if your going to use LED's plus resistance.  Otherwise you end up with a large amount of your distortion being produced by the op amp.  This may or may not be what you want. 

One of the difficulties in using true Mosfets as clippers is that the std. BS170/2N7000 we use around here have a clipping threshold around 2v.  Then if you use a "routing" diode, GE for example, you end up with your threshold around 2.3v.
