I figured out most of this stuff through bitter experience and the rest of the techniques that I need for my boards came from hours and hours, trawling around, a snippet here, another there... and yet here is a concise, easy to read digest of the major factors involved.  Wish I'd found this a lot earlier...

Even though he spends a bit of time on SMD, multi-layers, etc, which most of us aren't interested in (yet), it's still worth reading the whole thing and then saving it somewhere safe so you can refer back to the bits that are important to you.
