I want to stock an appropriate jack for the mod in this piece:

http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/xprnped.htm

I was not clear whether I would need one NC contact (like Switchcraft #13B) or two NC contacts (like Switchcraft #14B.)

Help from someone who has done this, or R. G.?

steve, i think you linked to the  quarter inch?

i have had field durability problems with 1/8" switching jacks due to the small contacts- they lose their spring/clamping in even light use over time.. i recommend 1/4" in contrast to RG's recommendation in the article.

edit- switchcraft doesn't seem to offer the open frame 1/8"jacks any more ( the ones i referred to), but even the current ones available have a 5000 cycle duty listing vs. the 10,000 listed for their 1/4".

14b looks like it would do what RG is referring to with one stereo cord with ground shield.

You need a jack which has a NC contact on both Tip and Ring. You have to break two out of the three wires to the internal pot to fully disable it in the general case.

Joe - I wasn't aware of the field issues with the 1/8" jacks. I don't get a lot of time setting up and tearing down stage setups these days.  :icon_lol:

In any case where you are going to have wear issues, there are two paths: either make the things very durable under the wear, or make them easily replaceable.  For this application, the 1/8" jacks may fit in places where a 1/4" won't. This is one reason I recommended them. But the 1/4" jacks may be the best choice for reliability if you can fit them in the box. If not, you may need something like a rotating magazine of 1/8" jacks. :icon_biggrin:

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

the 14B switchcraft does that.

RG, when can we expect the geofex tut on the four easiest methods of constructing a rotating 1/8"jack magazine?    :icon_cool:
