I have a ton of right angle 1/4" jacks lying around and I want to make some patch cords for my effects. Can anyone recommend a good guitar signal cable to build with? The outer diameter of the cable jacket would beed to be 6.5mm or 1/2in. for a good fit into the back of the jack.

I'm just a bedroom player.  I use Canare GS-6. 0.228" OD, 49pF/ft.

I bought mine from Markertek (4 colors, $0.90/ft). They match prices, and I've ordered over $350 in cables and connectors from them since 2006. Great company.

GS-6 is also available at many different places, including Redco (5 colors, $0.80/ft). Redco's equivalent (TGS-HD) is supposed to be good, and is only $0.49/ft (0.22" OD, black only, 44pF/ft). They also have Mogami W2524 for $0.73/ft (0.236" OD, black only, 39.7pF/ft).

I'm sure others have their favorites. :)

If you're not doing it for yourself, it's not DIY. ;)

Canare GS4 is slightly thinner for pedal board use. I would only use GS6 for long cables for my amp or guitar, but the GS4 would easily do well on a pedal board.

You can also use some of that George L's or the Lava Cable with regular 1/4" ends. That cable can be soldered in quite easily.

If you're worried about the thinner types a cables having too much room, find some heat shrink and put it on the cable where the jacket of the jack goes. Also make sure you crimp it inside the jack well to make sure the cable holds in and you can't put the cable apart by accident.
