So.. I took apart an old thermostat to salvage a few parts and I grabbed a funky looking cap, but I've no idea how to tell it's capacitance. I don't have any tools to measure that, but it is color-coded it seems. Anybody here know how to tell what it is?  It's probably about 25yrs old or so.

It's a fishy! Those are good mojo caps. The colours are the indicator for the value. Also, a DMM could tell you if it measures capacitance.

Yep, it's a "fishy" or a "bumblebee".

Just like in the world of wildlife, tropical fish look nothing like bumblebees:

DOH!  You are so right!  I mixed up my aquaria and apiaries.

Oh, haha, i didn't realize you could measure it with a DMM. I don't remember if mine measures capaciatance or not, but I didn't bother looking because I cut the 9v battery clip out of it the other day (i'll replace it soon) to mod my EMG pickup in my warlock to 18v. That's a fantastic upgrade if anyone else uses emgs, it brings it to life.  Thanks for the help folkss

Yep, it's a "fishy" or a "bumblebee".  Here are a few links for you.

One of the examples in the first link looks like the one in the picture: 0.047 uF 250 Volt.
