Strip board fuzz face question! Need help

Hi everyone. I'm totally new to the idea of building my own pedal but I've decided to give it a go.
So I've bought this fuzz face clone kit off eBay and I was wondering if anyone could help me out with the circuit board.
When I solder the transistors and resistors and other components into the stripboard, do they need to be touching (ie touching metal legs on the other side of the board)? Or can I just solder them in and the circuit will work fine?

hello and welcome, sidneyfuzz.

I'm a bit confused as to what you are asking, so can you post a link to the kit you bought, for us all to look at?

as for components on stripboard: where components are NOT meant to "touch" others, the copper track is cut (or will need to be cut). where the components are joined electrically, the solder you apply with your nice hot iron melts and forms a connection with the component lead and with the copper strip. and that's pretty much all you need for a circuit board, the components connecting where the circuit shows them connecting, and insulated from all other things, for want of a bettter termmm.

how much practise have you had with soldering? what do your joints look like, confidence?

Let me ask you something.
What your kit includes? You're talking about "stripboard", so you have bought one, right?
You can find some tutorials and guides about stripboard and soldering. Try to read it, that is a good beginning.
Try to read the schematic, too, and follow the layout you are building. And you can make some checks with a multimeter. Contacts, measures and something else

I advice you to solder socket pins for you transistor. In this way you can try different transistor, or at least you don't risk to damage it while you solder it.

First of all: Wellcome ..!!  :icon_biggrin:

I don't know any use for "touching" unless you use it for component cooling purpose (via a metal plier or aligatror clip..)

Maybe you refer to some kind of holding them in right place (and space). :icon_wink:

I can't send photos on this forum on my phone which is kind of annoying but if you go onto eBay and search 'Fuzz Face Clone Full Kit - Drilled Case Pots Knobs Footswitch Stompbox Pedal UK' there is a listing with photos. The reason I probably sound confusing is because I can't really describe what I'm trying to say. I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm not confident with the circuit board and soldering the components the correct way. Everything else is fine

Yeah my soldering skills are good but I haven't really worked with circuitry.

As a noob myself, I think I understand your question, and the answer would be "no" you do not need to connect the component's legs together if you have "strip board" or "veroboard"
In fact, you can cut the legs down after pushing them thru the holes.
The copper "tracks" make the "electrical connections" once the legs are soldered.
... and welcome  ;)

YES!!! Thank you so much that was exactly what I was trying to say hahahahahaha

Good!

I wish you want, one day, to build another pedal.
If you want to continue the "veroboard method", (I do), it is enough download a veroboard layout and wiring layout, to buy a big stripboard and cut it, all components, wires, and if you have a driller, a blank box to drill.

Good luck!

that kit does appear fairly well appointed. we will expect updates on your build's progress.

congratS on taking the plunge. its fun and highly addictive. I highly recommend small bear electronics  for future builds . you can buy all the parts in that kit for about half the money. I would also reccomend getting som npn germanium transitors to put in there and compare .if you do you will probably want to change the 330r resistor to 470r if i recall correctly .  I prefer the germaniums and you may as well. I hope it goes well for you. Take your time and dont rush it double check everything especially wiring . I finished my first of 58 builds one year ago today. Ill never forget plugging in that first pedal and it working. It was the first xmas morning in 33 years ha ha
