DS-1 Mod Noise Issues

Hey,

I've been tinkering with a DS-1 and have found the following combination to produce a very nice sound. Very warm and tube-y:

C2-1uf
C3-0.033uf
C5-1uf
C9-1uf

R14-1k5
R16-2k2
R15-15k

D4- 3mm Red LED

However, it has a bit less distortion than I'd like (more an overdrive than a distortion pedal). When I up the gain by lowering R13 (tried 1k and 2k2) there is considerably more noise - a sort of sizzling sound while not playing.

Any suggestions as how to increase the gain but not the noise in this circuit, or is this just a trade-off you have to accept for more distortion?
