I was having another stab at my hornet pedal today and i cannot seem to figure out the biasing on this pedal and the effects of the trim pot.  I put it to the values recommended on the original schem and then adjusted to ear but I can't wrap my head around whats happening in the pedal enough to get the right tone out of the two trannies.  one is a japanese pnp ge 2SD37 ( found it at a surplus store and it seems to sound pretty good, gain of 80 i believe) and then a 5088.  it still seems like the silicon trannie is doing all the clipping.  is there any where i can read up on this i've read alot on the fuzzface but this has still left the hornets functioning a little unclear.

As i was screwing around with it I put in an n channel jfet in q2 and it sounded really good like a deep pluckey gain but it makes the pedal ultra high gain output, but then the gain pot doesn;t do anything. what is happening here?

can anyone shed some light on this for me I feel like I am over half the way to understanding this pedal but mysteries lurk in the shadows. like this business of the trim (bias) pot between q2s emitter and q1s base. what sets the bias for q2? the trimpot above q1s collector?

I need some good reading on this one.
also what is a good c? high end roll off cap to try?
