It is a TO-18 with gold leads from the 60's

Written around the side it says exactly:
4JX11B1634B GE   (the GE could be before or after)

Some have GE below the string of numbers

There is lettering on top that I can make out on a small portion of them. They all say E11B, but below that are a different combo of 2 letters
Here's one:
E
11B
DE

Instead of DE, others say: SN, PN, SP, PX, etc...

Most of the hFE's are in the 20's and 30's

thanx

 fine felt tip marker ?

All numbers & letters are factory printed

The GE transistors used their own numbering scheme.  You have to get the GE transistor book to figure out the specs.

Hello LucifersTrip,

I had a look in my transistor data books ans found nothing, sorry.

I have similar transistor in TO-18 and TO-5 / TO-39, and these are RF/VHF Si transistors, Hfe =  20-40.  Good for a Shin-Ei FY-2 Companion Fuzz replica (2N3137, Hfe = 40).

To test if yours are Ge or Si, check the Iceo : less than 1µA = Si, 3-15µA = probably RF Ge, 20-200µA = AF Ge - but these are guidelines only !

A+!
I apologize for my approximative english writing and understanding !

Thanx...I was afraid of that...seems unlikely I'll get the book since this is my only GE transistor.

Thanx much for checking and for the info. I appreciate it.

Coincidentally, the Shin-Ei FY-2 Companion Fuzz is one of my next projects:

I was planning to use 2SC536 [ http://futurlec.com/cgi-bin/search/qty_price.cgi?part_no=2SC536 ], but I will definitely try these
4JX11B1634B's also.

Hi LucifersTrip,

The transistors that I used in my FY-2 are 2N3137 Si TO-5 VHF transistors with Hfe = 50. I tried Hfe = 120typ (like the 2SC536) and even Hfe = 400-500 (BC109) but the sound was not as good as with the 2N3137, even with some value tweaking. So your Si transistors worth to be tried...

You probably will find, like me, that the level output of the pedal is too low (it is nonetheless a well-known fact on this pedal), so I added an output gain stage consisting of a third 2N3137, and it is OK. The pots I use are 50K Linear.

The sound of the FY-2 (Si version) is similar to the SuperFuzz (scooped mids) but with less gain and with a more "destroy/psychadelic" (but very good) feeling... An oddity worth to be tried !

I definitely will try those and some other 1960's low gain transistors I have...I will also try some combinations.

I am a novice with adding stages to circuits...Is there a schematic posted with the output gain stage?

Excellent...that is what I was hoping for. I started with the common Fuzz Face, but quickly moved on making the less popular ones.
I just completed a Sunn Buzz, which has a dirty bee sound when tweaked. The skull I entered in the 666 had a Buzz Box in it,
but that sound is more modern.  I am currently troubleshooting a Jen Fuzz...

Excellent case! I always like the ones that aren't typical rectangular boxes. The dirty case probably matches the sound.
Thanx again for all the info.

Hi LucifersTrip,

I created a topic about my SBRODJ Fuzz, thinking that the information was valuable to be shared. You will find all additional information and the schematic here :

The sound is way different from a Fuzz Face. If you are searching an oddity, you won't be disappointed... Nonetheless, I will have a look to the Sunn Buzz, as suggested. It's a matter of time, as always...

Sounds great...I'll definitely check it out. I may add a 3rd stage after I listen to the original.

That one really didn't sound anything like the others I've made, but I usually end up with something different than the original sound anyway. I don't know if it's because of my part substitutions (which are supposed to be equivalents) or the sound of my cheap amp.

Either was it was fun to make 1.5v pedal. I am considering the Fuzz King next:
