I am thinking that I would like to build one of these, do any of you have a recommendation for a kit based on your own build experiences?  thanks.

I've built two of the Tonepad Ross clones: http://www.tonepad.com/project.asp?id=9

Excellent build, and very much worth it. However, it's just the PCB - you would have to order parts yourself, and that's a bit more complicated. If you aren't up for that yet, I recommend looking at the BYOC compressor kits. I personally would love to build the Optical Compressor from BYOC.

E-mail me at smallbearelec@ix.netcom.com. I will reply with a parts list keyed to my store:

that makes it pretty easy to find the generic bits and pieces. You get to "roll-your-own" kit with your choice of case, knobs, fittings.

The Ross comp I built on perf was pretty dull sounding (even on it's lowest setting). As is the general recommendation, I added a dry blend to compensate, and that sounded perfect. I'd look for one with that, like the BYOC or similar.
