The Roland AP-7 specifies one of these.  My Japanese transistor manual gives the following specs for it:
Vcbo - 60
Vceo - 50
ICma - 150
PCmw - 400
Icbo (ua) - .1
hfe - 200-400
Vce - 1
Vcb - 10

My 1973 Sams replacement guide lists the following substitutions (among a number of others): 2SC734, BC107B, BC171B, BC183L, BC184L, MPS6515/6520/6521, HEP55, ECG123A.

Any idea what I can use from the contemporary parts bin instead?

Unless it's in an RF section, any modern NPN. The 2N3904 is about those same specs, although I think BVceo is only 40. If the power supply is well under 40V, most modern NPNs will do it. It's easy to get too high an hfe, although in well designed circuits, that tends to not matter. My favorite, the 2N5088 is only a little light in the total current (150ma is a bit steep) and a bit too high in hfe to be a great match, but too much hfe is an easy sin to forgive.

ECG123A is shorthand for "any small signal NPN transistor".  :icon_lol:

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

I kind of figured as much, but when the document you're working with has a bunch of Japanese scrawls (as opposed to "script") around it, I'm reluctant to stride confidently to the parts drawer.

Thanks, guy.  You've helped me out a lot this week.  I appreciate it.

I came up with these too:
BC 167, BC 237, BC 547, 2SD767
Little Diode on Ebay has the originals but they are spendy
And you'll have to admit, I'll be rich as shit
I'll just sit and grin, the money will roll right in....

I would think BC109B should be in the approximate gain range (or BC108B, but BC109 is low noise).  Pin-outs may be different on some of those subs you mentioned (like BC183L) but you can get around that.

Might as well go with a vintage one:
