A few questions about a GGG CB-1 project

Hey, well this is my first try at a kit; the most complex thing I've done electronically is wire my P-bass and that's nothing. I have some questions regarding modifying the project slightly.

Here's the diagram given:

What I want to do is use two pink LEDs instead of the single red LED. However...uh, I don't know how exactly to make this work.
I also am going to use using a plastic enclosure and shield it with copper tape. I know that isn't ideal but this isn't going to be something used outside my room.

Here's the thing...I assembled everything as shown in this diagram. For the LEDs, I wired it as shown except I connected the positive end of the first to the negative end of the second, which was then wired to the board as you would the single red LED. When I plugged in everything, I could hit the switch and the LEDs would light up, but there's no sound -- basically it's a really bright mute button. Should I be using a resistor with the LEDs or something?

Here's the specs of the LEDs I'm using: http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2Fp0345_specs.htm

Oh, I'm omitting the 9v battery snap, but as I understand that won't change anything regarding the wiring -- but this also reminds me so I may as well ask while it's here: does it matter whether I use the "tip" or "ring" to connect the jack to the 3PDT in this situation?

Sorry, I don't have a multimeter right now...

If your LEDs light up when you hit the switch, and turn off when you hit the switch again, then they're good. The no sound issue likely has nothing to do with the LEDs. You now need to debug your build:
