Smash Drive Gain Control

For anyone still having a problem with the un-smoothness of the gain control: ditch the original gain control, save the 5k pot and use the pot with a 10uf electro between pins 1 and 8. So it would be like this: pin 1 > pot > cap > pin 8. The negative lead of the cap goes to pin 8. Hope this helps somebody.

does this have the same fizz/flutter as the 'simple 2 knob hi gainer project' ?

on the decaying note?...just curious!.

The gain control on the Smash Drive doesn't do much. It's either on full, or "not much". If I were to do it again, I might just use a toggle switch for the gain control. Take a look at the 386 data sheet to see what they say about gain control. If I recall, there is another schematic floating around that uses a pot before the chip as a "gain" control. Haven't tried that yet.

The OD 386 was based on the Smash Drive, and I'm guessing it will also have the fizz at the end of notes. Deadastronaut, remove the two JFET inputs from your circuit and go direct to the chip through a capacitor and see if you still get the fizz.

Turns out the "other pedal" is a Krank Distortus Maximus. Here's someone's schematic:

There may be some more Krank demos on You Tube if a few DIYers have built any. I have not heard the entire demo in the link (^%#^#^ internet connection here), so I need to see if I can hear the fizz or not. If the fizz is present, I'll say it's the chip, if not, I'll have to wonder if it has to do more with what's in front of the chip.

in the process of trying to get rid of fizz i ended up improving  the smashdrive and big daddy i can confirm this now works with no fizz...

it was , it seems down to power filtering.......ive called it the 'big daddies b*****d sister' , as it is a bastardized version of both...

im posting the schematic on the original thread ok...it works...waheyyy...

i just now have to see if it works on my original idea with the 2 j201;s..cant see why not!....cheers man. rob.


yep i built that too..still the same problem though!.......i even asked a few youtube krank demo'ers and they said they had the same problem..

but werent bothered about it.....strange attitude...but hey crack on then...or crackle on then...
