If you spend any time studying the schem, there are some fascinating ideas in there- independent quadrature LFO's for treble/bass, use of tda1074a "dual tandem electronic potentiometer" chip for stereo panning and stereo field manipulation, etc... Even if you don't want to build a full blown cls-222, some of these ideas could be applied (even with different techniques) to simpler analog circuits (phase shift, chorus, etc) to spice them up quite a bit.

I've always built from schematics, the trick is to build one section at a time and when happy it's working, go on to the next. With very few exceptions, I've always used veroboard on which I draw borders with a marking pen for each section. I also use as many jumpers as I need
