I have never done any of this stuff.  What I want is to build a simple pre-amp.  I need to know... everything.  Sites where I can get all the parts I need would be great.  If it could be built as a stomp box that would be perfect.

Check here (Tonepad) for all the preamp projects. http://www.tonepad.com/projects.asp?projectType=fx
and here (GGG) boosters etc http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/projects
Pcb's, parts and kits available. Tutorials. Read Geofex and AMZ. Links above. Should get you a good start on all the information and kit availabilties. Check the links link also. Tons of great sites that offer kits and information.

1 stage, 9v. very inexpensive. LPB is about easiest and color by number, Jfet requires understanding Jfet bias [choose other active..].
2 stages means cost figures rise by small amount [takes 'dressing' expense to make anything with features in box, active stages add smaller amounts].
Your bound to buy switch 'n jack, 18Vdc ? Split Supply ?
What do you want the preamp to do ?
Is it intended as driver for output amplifier ? {you'll want tone control
Or preamp plugged in to drive preamp ? {might not need enormous gain [boost] = sensative input.
What plugs into it, what does it plug in to ? [impedance matches ?
