Tried an ne5532 and it had a very small spot on the trim where it would bias (too high or low there was no output). sounded good but a little less output than a 4558.
Tl072 didnt work at all.
Anyone find any others that work?
Why is this circuit so picky?

The transistors have a big effect. Of ten builds one with NTE's outshines the rest likely due to being way out of spec. Still afraid to unsolder and measure  :P Otherwise I used RC4558P's in all.

ayayay!

???  That shouldn't be.  I have to wonder about your build.  For one thing, in another thread you had talked about how hard it was to find the sweet spot with the trim pot.  That doesn't make any sense either.  It should be easy to find and noticeable for a lot of the travel of the trim pot.

Do you have a drawing of your board layout?  That might help.

This circuit is really not picky if built right.  I speak from experience because my first attempt at it didn't go so well either.  Acted more like a booster because I had the source & gate on the 2n5457's reversed.  :-\
