Mid Boost

I like the mid boost active circuit that's in my 1992 Japanese Stratocaster. It's very similar to the active circuit in the Eric Clapton strat.

Instead of modifying my other strats to emulate this tone, I'd like to put the active circuit into a stomp box. Has anyone done this or does anyone have any suggestions?

Or, are there any pedals out there that will emulate the tone in that circuit?

Many thanks,

Chad

Not a bad idea... the only issue I see is that the onboard version has the direct signal from the pickups to work with. In the pedal case, you will have the signal going thru your onboard passive tone control and get a bit of loss there. You could build one of these but you can also ebay the E.C. midboost for pretty cheap. Just a thought...

Right on - its easy enough to install the mid boost kit. I'm hoping to get the same out of a pedal to aviod modifying a couple of guitars.

What are your thoughts on the Anderton Freq Booster? I'm wondering if that would do the trick?

I have no experience with Anderton's circuit but I'll try to take some time and compare both.
One thing I like about modding at the guitar level, the tone circuit with ganged tone pot in the E.C midboost really gives you so much more overall frequency response compared to the passive tones. Even without any boost, I find more low end and more highs with this design.

The Anderton unit is dead simple and cheap to make, and easily customizable.  I use it for resonant boosts inserted into a couple of overdrives, and have one as a standalone too.

I don't know if it provides the degree or selectivity of boost that the Claton or one in your guitar does, but it sounds decent and functions reliably.

what about just installing the clapton boost in a pedal? just sayin' that would be the easiest. not really diy though, so bummer there.

A stompbox would be nice. For some reason I've always hated using batteries in my guitar.
Big Muff, Trotsky Drive, Little Angel, Valvecaster, Whisker Biscuit, Smash Drive, Green Ringer, Fuzz Face, Rangemaster, LPB1, Bazz Fuss/Buzz Box, Radioshack Fuzz, Blue Box, Fuzzrite, Tonepad Wah, EH Pulsar, NPN Tonebender, Torn's Peaker...

If you have Andertons book "Projects for Guitarists" with the Frequency Booster in it, check out the "Clarifier" on-board Preamp/EQ project. It is described as "a two control, active eq circuit that provides over 12db of bass and treble boost and up to 6db of bass and treble cut." There are plans in the book for mounting it in a guitar , or in an external box. I'm not sure if this would do what the circuit you have in your guitar does, but it is worth a look.
