Well, you can go to the guy that originally drew that schematic and read the technology of... articles straight from the horse's mouth (Sorry, R.G. didn't mean to call you a horse )  Basically that guy's post paraphrases R.G.'s original article on the technology of the phaser, looks like he does a pretty good job of explaining it.

Check out the Runoffgroove and Beavis Audio stuff too, I don't feel like doing a bunch of googling right now so I'm sure someone will chime in with JC's page, Mark Hammer's stuff, and all the other great pages.
