For electrolytic capacitors, i have a schematic that does not specify polarity.  How can i tell which direction they are supposed to go?  there is a square lead and a circle lead, does this have anything to do with it?

The straight lead is positive, the curved lead is negative.

The sure way to know is to determine by the schematic which terminal is more positive than the other, and put the positive end of the cap there.

The circle pad is the negative side of the electro cap.  The cap should be clearly marked with a big fat stripe for the negative side.  That was the question you were asking, right?

oops, i thought the striped side was the positive side

There are typically dashes in the stripe, these are to indicate  the "-" symbol.
