There are pros and cons to both methods. Neither is right or wrong. There is a fine art and craftmanship to using either style. Both are nice for what they are trying to accomplish. It comes down to design considerations and overall cost when using either method. Here is a good Pro Guitar Shop article that I got today via email explaining both:

The article makes a good point about negative aspects of PCB mounted parts like jacks and tube sockets. That's one reason I don't like PCB mounted jacks - but I do like the 'option' of using PCB mounted pots to hold the board suspended in place. With that type part there is no joint stress at all (if you space your case mounting holes properly to match the board attachment centering so as not to twist them) and/or heating introduced to the solder joints like with board mounted jacks and/or tubes. It all comes down to best design practices if you want to use such parts. Just think things through looking at what can go wrong and then work your design such that it avoids the pitfalls.

Maybe this post should belong in the Lounge area? Wasn't sure since it relates to stompbox building aspects too.

Funny Deliverance PCB text:

Then there's the PCB-vs-hand wired article at geofex, from 2000, eleven years ago.

And the enhanced versions of that which I wrote up for Premier Guitar when I was doing the column there. I believe that's still on line.

I guess in a decade, other people have noticed the info and started coming around.  :icon_biggrin:

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Can I just say, by the way, that I miss those articles.  They were, if I'm honest, the only thing in that magazine worth reading, but since I got it for free I did look forward to them.
