so i started building a compressor with a crappy old burnt out tip soldering iron. Got half way through and decided i needed a new one. Bought a £10 wilkinsons iron which ended up the same after 3 uses! terrible.

Now i've finished the compressor, the hero board is breaking down thanks to excessive soldering because of the tips literally falling off. It doesn't work and i'm not going to go through the fuss of debugging something that i doubt will never work.

Before i order some new parts and attempt the build again i need a new iron. I found this one and wanted some opinions before i bought. Thanks

That one is alright , you need an adaptor though , as written in the description .
I have a similar clone  :icon_mrgreen:
OHWAIT , choose another model , this one only has 35W , and mine is a 936E with 60W ( i checked the transformer )
Oh damn , i tried to search for you , i think this one should be better for you , 45W

I would make sure that you can buy new tips for it easily before you close the deal

If you don't already have this or can't see clearly because your workbench doesn't have a lamp or you are shadowing your light ,
get this , it's important some day onward  :icon_mrgreen:

According to what i use , i put in at 370C or maybe 375C which is the brown center point marking , turn a little bit and it hits 370 !
Crank up to at least 400C ( i go mad sometimes for 425C) for heavy duty stuff like pot body soldered caps .
I don't know how much change would 35W make but oh well , just leave it at 370C for normal board work , no more then 10 seconds and you'll be fine .
It just won't heat up in 25 seconds flat like mine , probably more like 45 seconds ?

got my new soldering station today. Fired it up, tinned the tip etc..and began using it. I have to say it works a hell of a lot better than the crappy one i had before. Definitely worth the money. Half way through my 2nd attempt at a build and it looks so much cleaner than the first attempt. Most noticeable is that i'm using half the amount of solder, and it's not almost black!

so yeah, thanks for all the help guys :)

I work with my iron set to about 750F, I get great solder joints and mostly work touch and go!
