i want to build the metal master, and i don't have find any scheme for it.
does anybody here have it?
thanks and I'm sorry about my English

The Metal Master is a digital effect, so having a schematic wouldn't help. It's all in the DSP's code.
If you like that kind of sound I think it goes for a fair price anyway, I have one myself.

so, what other distortion pedal can i build?
this is my first pedal, but i want heavy metal distortion.

The BSIABII is a good high gain Van Halen-like distortion pedal. It's my favorite stand-alone distortion. Try General Guitar Gadgets for a PCB or a kit. The Dr Boogey is also supposed to be very good (modeled on a Dual Rec preamp), but I haven't built one yet. I think Madbean sells PCBs for it. Runoffgroove has layouts for other pedals like the Thor, another Marshall-like pedal. There's also the Crunch Box which is supposed to be a Marshall Guv'nor with more gain and a simplified tone section. I haven't seen anywhere selling Crunch Box PCBs, but I've seen layouts out there. I have one from MI Audio that sounds great and much better than the Guv'nor I built. Build Your Own Clone has kits for the Marshall Shredmaster.

Most "Heavy Metal" distortions require gobs and gobs of gain, which means 1) lots of components and 2) a tendency to be either oscillate or just be really noisy.  The first just means a little experience is necessary.  For the latter techniques like good lead dress and proper grounding scheme become crucial.  What I'm getting at, is that if it's your first pedal, you might want to go for something else.  Just until you have a couple of concepts and a little experience under your belt.  I'm not saying you have to start with a single stage booster, but there are several good Distortion designs out there that aren't extremely complex (Distortion +, Rat, Metal Simplex) and while they might not be that "Metal", will serve as a good stepping stone for something a little more metal (like a zvex BOM, Dr Boogie, BSIAB, or Boss Metal zone).

Good Luck!

Edit:  Also it would be helpful info to know if you mean "Classic Metal" a la 80's Metallica and the like, or "Modern Metal" which has, in my opinion, a much heavier sound usually.

I would have to guess a Dr. Boogie would be in order here.  ;)

If I recall, Metallica used the Mesa Boogie Rectifier brand quite extensively. I built a Dr. Boogie and it has plenty of Gain on tap...  ;)

EDIT: There is even a simple 2-knob version that eliminated the tone stack. Just Volume and Gain at its finest!

I've heard Metallica used ProCo Rats into Marshalls on one of their earlier albums. There's plenty of Rat kits out there and it's not too hard to build them on perf. You could always put two Rat circuits into one box and cascade one into the other for more gain.

As already written in http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=91260.0 it would be better if you experiment with low part projects.
Maybe a ready to solder kit would be appropriate. For example http://www.buildyourownclone.com/250.html
A Dr. Boogie would be to much for the start.

When I got started, I ordered a few kits with the intention of doing BYOC's 250+ as a beginner project before getting into the more complicated effects. But I got my GGG Rodent in the mail a few days earlier, so that's what I started with and it was pretty easy. After a few builds from GGG and BYOC kits, I felt like I had outgrown kits and started building my own stuff. As long as you're ok with soldering, the kits are a great way to get started. I'd recommend the Rodent since you're into Metallica. It only has one extra pot and I didn't find it much harder than the 250+, plus you'll wind up with a pedal you'll actually use when you're done. Then you can move up to some of the more complicated kits like the Shredmaster.

+1 on a Rat/Rodent. Not too hard to build and is a nice versatile sound. It's the go-to dirt box on my pedalboard right now.

thanks everybody!

i think that i take the Dr. Boogie.
where can i find the enclosure for it?

mremic01

I don't think anyone sells enclosures for the Dr Boogey. Madbean has the PCBs, but you have to get all the parts together, including the enclosure. Some places will sell pre-drilled enclosures, but the Dr Boogey has something like 5 or 6 pots, so I imagine it would be difficult to find one with enough holes drilled. I'd recommend at least A 1590BB for fitting it all in there.

If you're worried about enclosures, I'd really go with a kit for a first build. You'll get an enclosure pre-drilled with the correct amount of holes and proper spacing.

i think that one of the enclosures here:  http://www.pedalenclosures.com/Products/tabid/69/c/YY-enclosures/CategoryID/4/Default.aspx

can be good.
but how can i drill it?

Those enclosures are nice, but expensive. This is half the price: http://www.pedalpartsplus.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PPP&Product_Code=1104&Category_Code=

You drill it with a drill press. I use a hand drill, but it's sloppy. A unibit is useful for drilling.

If you have a drill and some drill bits.... you can take simple measurements based on a layout and just drill.

I would recommend a UNIBIT. They are invaluable for enclosure drilling.

Also, you may be able to email pedalenclosures and see if they will pre-drill a design of your creation for a few dollars more.

Keep in mind that you'll need to order other parts for your pedal besides the enclosure, and the shipping cost shouldn't change much if at all after you add those in.....

but i dont think that i will buy the other things from pedal parts plus...

mremic01

Pedal Parts Plus has problems with the way they calculate shipping. If you wind up paying too much, they will refund it. It's not as expensive as it looks.

Try Effects Connection as well. They have free shipping if you order over 50$ worth of stuff. Small Bear Electronics has decent shipping rates if you stock up on a lot of parts, but I wouldn't buy just one or two things because shipping will still be 4-5$.
