umi buzzbox question

can anyone reccomend me some good ge pnp's to try in this circuit? at the moment, i'm kinda stuck with getting nte parts at a local distributor...too poor to buy stuff online

does ge really matter in this kind of circuit? should i just build it with say, 2n3906's? i've had a LOT of probs with ge trannys.

or...do you think it would be cool to reverse the single electrolytic and make it an negative ground npn version?

i mean, i used to own one of these...it was bloody horrible sounding, i totally loved it...so i'm thinking if anything, silicon may actually help!! lol

Try this; 2N3906 in Q1, and a 2N2905A in Q2. Try to get an hFe of around 185 for the 2N2905A. At my local shop, the 2905A's sell for .98$ per 2. This is the combo I have in the fuzz section of my PNP (formerly Ge) Skyripper. I had a 2SB172 in the Range and Fuzz slots before, but I swapped it out for fun. In my setup, it went from great to fantastic.

And if you have a Rangemaster circuit kicking around, try a 2N2904A, with an hFe of around 70. 3 pack is 1.40$ here. Worked wonders in the Range section of my Ripper as well.

Yeah, you could try flipping to NPN. Then you could share a power supply as well. Would kill the mojo factor though. Hmm, I would try the NTE129 (PNP) in Q2, with a 2N3906 in Q1. I've found that Si fuzz boxes are much less finiky about gain offsets. Generally, 2 like trannies tend to do just fine, but I like to mix things up a bit for fun. For the 2N3906, try to get Q1 around the 120 to 140 range, and an NTE129 in Q2 at around 180 to 190.

I would also have a 220 to 470 pF cap on standby to bridge between B and C on Q2 for hiss reduction.

And if you really want to go all out silicon, why not the diode as well? Maybe a 1N4148? Maybe even 3 diodes, with a switch, to jump between sym and asym like this (ignore the cap C1 and resistor R1, they're from a different circuit);



Use a DPDT switch, one side for the diode, and a 50K trimmer on the other side to compensate for the change of volume between sym and asym. I used a pot in my last build, and labeled it "OFFSET". That way I could set the volume to be a bit louder in sym mode, kind of like a slight lead boost.

mojo be dam(maged?)ned, i'm working it up to be an npn, makes my life a lot easier in the long run. gonna socket the transistors, heck, i'm even gonna socket the leads to the pots...figure that way, i can play with the values all day long if i want to, and if i don't like the result, i can just unplug stuff.

i've got a bunch of circuits i've built now that may be fun but just don't merit being boxed, so i figure this way i can save some cash on the more expensive parts.

anyways, almost done working out a crude vero, i know it could be made smaller, but i like a little bit of space to work with as i have huge fingers. sometimes trying to make it as small as possible shoots me in the foot...i'll up it when i'm done.
