zendrive clone issue

i built the zen drive according to the frequency central layout. but i am having a issue with the gain knob. the more your turn it up the sound fizzes out and goes away . when the knob about half way it sounds bad. but with the knob at 0 or 1/4 it has a nice overdrive sound to it. what could be the issue.
