2n404s in the MJM Brit Bender Tonebender Mk 2

I saw a demo recently of the MJM Brit Bender 2 knob...it sounded great and pretty darned authentic, but I saw a gut shot later and the transistors were definitely not the OC 75s or even the AC125s I've often seen these circuits use (with really good results, too).  Is the Brit Bender using 2n404s?  I seem to recall someone out here suggesting that these transistors were being used in recent years to good effect in this circuit.  Anybody have experience with them?
