The hum is different according to what cable I use, but it doesn't appear in another room

RFI/EMI is a cruel unforgiving opponent.  You have something that room that is radiating electromagnetic noise.  Get an outlet tester and make sure that your outlets are wired properly, hopefully you just have a bad ground that is easily repaired.

it would be beeping like crazy anywhere you are in the room(s) where you have this problem.
