Noob pot question

When you are looking at a pot on a schematic... is there a way to tell how to wire it up according to the way it is oriented on the schematic?

Like if the wiper is to the LEFT of the resistor, does that mean the connection on top goes to lug 1 or 3??

I think that if there is a convention so many people fail to follow it that it is difficult to apply.

That being said I *think* that if the wiper is pointing down then the lugs go 1-2-3 (numbered left to right looking at the top of a pot).

Which would mean in your situation Lug 1... I think....
