so i think i got very lucky.
after taking apart the bd, and comp and inspecting the boards/ pots, it looks like theyre clean... i gave em a bit of a once over just to be sure.
i did clean out the jacks and boxes pretty good... dried em out thouroughly and put em back together.
using a half dead battery, i plugged em in and they both work fine... actually i may have fixed a bit of a noise issue with the milkbox comp.
seems theres no direct ground on the output jack, it just gets grounded via the box. but the box had a thick coat of enamel on it, so i scraped off the paint around the 2 jacks, and i 'think' the comp is actually a bit less noisy now...?! thats all i can think of unless somehow the jack wires are in a less noisy spot in the box... either way, everythings back and functioning normally.
as far as the burning smell, i guess it was the adapter plug that was shorting to ground and getting hot. i pulled it as soon as i smelled it so i must have pulled it in time.
whew! im so relieved that i didn't get yanked into a fried component hunt fiasco!  :)
thanks again guys, i appretiate all the help!
nothing says forever like a solid block of liquid nails!!!
