Two Old Variacs

The numbering scheme is as follows:

Staco 2 = Ground

Staco 3 = Hot Output

Staco 4 = bottom right terminal - not connected

Staco 5 = Hot Input

Staco 1 = unconnected tap

It sure looks like a single winding.  Are you saying there are two windings interlineated with each other on my Variacs?

If not, I am having a hard time understanding how a single winding transformer can step up.
