I've already built the MXR and like it (don't LOVE it).  Heard a YT clip of a DIY Mutron III that sounded really good, but it seems like a bit more time-consuming with the Neutron due to the photocells and dual power supply.

Anybody built both and prefer the Mutron? (was it worth the trouble?)

A *good* Mu-Tron/Neutron tends to have a much wider sweep than an MXR-EF, which people like.  It can also have a higher resonance, which gives greater impact.  The MXR-EF can be encouraged to have higher resonance, and can also do downward sweep, although I think it likely needs tweaking for downward sweep.

Where the EF tends to have it over the Mu-Tron is with respect to adjusting the sweep/attack rate to suit the song.  Some may find that a more useful feature.  The EF can also be tapped to provide lowpass as well as bandpass outputs, though this is more straightforward with a Mu-Tron.
